Remove sodefender.pro pop-up notifications
sodefender.pro is identical to thousands of websites that try to trick users into allowing desktop ads. Sites like sodefender.pro misuse a legitimate browser feature that allows sites to request permission to show notifications on users’ desktops. When redirected to this site, you’ll immediately get a browser alert saying “sodefender.pro wants to show notifications”. While this feature is legitimate, if you click “Allow”, you’ll start seeing ads on your desktop. Those ads will not only be annoying but could also expose you to potentially dangerous content. Fortunately, even if you have given it permission, it’s not difficult to revoke it.
Websites such as sodefender.pro exploit a legitimate browser feature that permits sites with permission to send notifications to your desktop. While this feature can be safe when used by trustworthy websites, sodefender.pro is a scam site, making its notifications unsafe. Allowing it to send notifications may result in exposure to potentially dangerous advertisements, including prompts to download dubious software. You could also encounter scam messages, such as invitations to join fake giveaways. If you’ve granted this site permission to send notifications, avoid interacting with its ads, and revoke the permission as soon as possible. You can find instructions for this at the end of the report.
Despite frequent misuse, the notification feature can be useful. If there’s a website you frequently visit and want updates from, you can choose to enable notifications for it. For example, granting permission to a news site will allow it to show news alerts directly on your desktop. You can withdraw this permission whenever you like.
We recommend running a scan with an anti-virus program like WiperSoft to check for adware that may be causing the issue. If adware is present, this program will eliminate it. Installing an adblocker is also a good idea.
Adware may be the reason for the redirects
There are typically two main reasons for being redirected to random websites: either your computer is infected with adware or similar malware, or you’re visiting high-risk sites and clicking on things that trigger these redirects. Usually, it’s the latter. Installing an adblocker can effectively reduce these random redirects when browsing potentially problematic, ad-heavy sites.
However, if you find yourself being redirected while visiting safe websites unexpectedly, it could indicate that your computer has adware installed. This type of malware is usually benign, as it primarily exposes users to advertisements. Adware often installs through a method known as software bundling, meaning it can come attached to free programs as an additional offer. Many free programs have these offers, which are set to install automatically alongside the main program, despite being optional.
To avoid these unwanted installations, pay attention when installing free programs and manually deselect all offers. Choose Advanced or Custom settings instead of Default, as this will display all additional offers, giving you the choice to deselect them. While some of these offers might appear useful at first, it’s better to avoid installing them, as they will only cause problems.
